Coming off their hard-fought loss to the North Carolina Tar Heels, the Winthrop men's basketball team entered a tough pair of games against the Mississippi State Bulldogs out of the Southeastern Conference and the Maryland Terrapins out of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Winthrop 74, Mississippi St. 63

The Eagles went on the road to a hostile SEC environment and took down the Bulldogs 74-63.

Mississippi State got off to a quick start, but couldn't open up a big lead due to a strong Eagles defense.

Winthrop took a one point lead 2:26 into the game and didn't relinquish it through the remainder of the half.

The Eagles hit their first 10 point lead at 12:55 of the first half, but the Bulldogs were able to get that lead back down to three less than four minutes later.

The Winthrop lead stayed under 10 points for most of the first half and the Eagles took a seven point lead, 35-28 into the locker room.

Mississippi State went on a 9-0 run to start the second half and took a two point lead. Two free throws by senior forward Phillip Williams tied the game at 37.

The two free throws was a start of an 11-0 run by the Eagles and they took a nine point lead at 46-37.

Winthrop increased their lead to 12 points with 12:02 to play in the game. The Bulldogs got as close as five with 6:56, but couldn't get any closer.

Williams posted his first career double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Senior guard Torrell Martin, junior guard Michael Jenkins and senior center Craig Bradshaw all scored in double figures.

Winthrop 60, Maryland 71

Following their victory over Mississippi State the Eagles traveled to take on the Maryland Terrapins of the ACC.

Maryland got out to an early 7-2 lead, but Winthrop battled back to tie the game at seven. The Eagles looked strong as they gained a 12-11 lead with 12:43 to play in the half. This was the only lead the Eagles would have.

Maryland quickly opened up a 10 point lead less than four minutes later and finished off the first half with a 16 point lead at 42-26.

The Terrapins didn't allow Winthrop a chance to get back into the game as they increased their lead to 22 points less than four minutes into the second half.

Maryland's largest lead came with 7:01 to play when they led the Eagles by 26 points.

Winthrop, however, did not go quietly. The Eagles went on a 12-1 run over the last 2:20 of the game and cut the Maryland margin of victory down to 11.

"It was a night where we didn't shoot the ball well at all," Marshall said in The Herald. "We got the ball inside a handful of times and rarely it ever went strong. It was one thing after another. It was a Winthrop loss to a better team. They were considerably better than us tonight."

Bradshaw led the Eagles with 15 points while Martin contributed 14.

Winthrop will travel to Northern Illinois for a rematch of last year's double overtime thriller when the Eagles defeated the Huskies 98-97. The Eagles will then travel to take on Wisconsin of the Big 10 Conference.
