The excitement of being a Winthrop men's basketball fan came to a point this past week as the Eagles had two heart-stopping games against the High Point Panthers and in-state rival Coastal Carolina Chanticleers.

Winthrop 64, High Point 63

The Eagles came into the game against High Point in second place, by lieu of percentage points, behind the Panthers.

High Point came out and grabbed an early lead and held that lead for the majority of the first half. The Panthers led by six with 11:31 remaining in the first half.

The largest lead the Eagles held in the first half was two with 4:33 to play. High Point led by four with 1:21 left. Senior center Craig Bradshaw cut the lead down to one with 1:06 to play.

Following a High Point time out with 33 seconds left, the Panthers turned the ball over with five seconds to go, and junior guard Michael Jenkins gave the Eagles a one-point halftime edge with a dunk and two seconds to play.

In the early minutes of the second half, the game went back and forth with each team taking a small lead. High Point led by one with 13:42 to play. Winthrop then went on a 12-0 run to open up an 11-point lead with 10:06 remaining.

High Point, however, slowly chipped away at the Winthrop lead and got the lead down to one with 42 seconds remaining. Senior forward Phillip Williams launched a three with the shot clock winding down, but was unsuccessful and gave High Point a chance for the win.

Panther senior guard Landon Quick came down with the rebound and passed the ball to the team's leading scorer, junior forward Arizona Reid. Reid drove down the floor and got off a jumper that rattled out as time expired.

Junior forward Antwon Harris led the Eagles with 21 points. Bradshaw also scored in double figures as he added 14 points and four rebounds. In the second half the Eagles converted only 50 percent of their free throws.

Winthrop 65, Coastal Carolina 63

Last season Craig Bradshaw dashed the hopes of the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers in the Big South Conference Championship hitting the winning shot with nine seconds to play.

Saturday, in front of the first sellout crowd in 25 years at the Winthrop Coliseum Bradshaw did it again. This year, Bradshaw converted on one of two free throws with 47 seconds to play to put Winthrop up by one for the win.

Winthrop controlled play early and got the crowd behind them as they started to get a lead on Coastal. The Eagles led 22-11 with 11:24 to play in the first half.
