The Eagles avoided being swept by the Redhawks this weekend by pulling out a 5-4 victory in the second game of the double-header Saturday.

Just as in the first game of the day, the Redhawks jumped on the Winthrop pitching staff in the top of the first inning as they put up two runs to go up 2-0. Miami went up 3-0 in the top of the fourth when they added one more run on two hits.

The Eagles got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning when Carey hit his first homerun of the season to get the Eagles within two. Winthrop tied the contest at three in the bottom of the fifth as sophomore outfielder Tyler McBride hit his first career homerun with one runner on to tie the game.

The following inning the Eagles picked up one run and took a 4-3 lead on one hit and one error by Miami.

Miami put one run on the board in the ninth on two hits and one Winthrop error and left the bases loaded. After Miami scored one and had the bases loaded, Eagle closer, Settle came in and got two outs to keep the game tied.

In the bottom of the tenth freshman catcher John Murrian scored on a wild pitch to give the Eagles a 5-4 victory to avoid the sweep.

Settle picked up the victory for the Eagles, his second of the season, as he gave up only one hit on 1.2 innings pitched.

The Eagles will be back in action Wednesday, Feb. 28 as they travel to Clemson for a 4 p.m. contest.
