Eagles finish ranked in three Top 25 polls

The Winthrop men's basketball team has been ranked in the final Top 25 of the Associated Press, USA Today/ESPN and Collegehoops.net polls after completing the season with a 29-5 record and a win over Notre Dame in the NCAA tournament.
Coach Gregg Marshall's Eagles were ranked No. 22 in both the AP and USA Today/ESPN Top 25 polls and finished No. 20 in the Collegehoops.net Top 50 Poll.
In addition to those rankings, the Eagles also finished second in the Collegeinsder.com Mid-Major Poll voting, finishing behind Southern Illinois.
Winthrop made school and conference history when it defeated the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame, 74-64, at Spokane in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
The 2007 Eagles are the first team in Big South Conference history to ever be ranked in the Top 25 of the various men's basketball polls.
Winthrop soared to its third straight Big South championship and seventh during Gregg Marshall's nine years as head coach. The Eagles became the first Big South team to ever finish the regular season conference schedule undefeated as they were 14-0 before sweeping through the three-game post-season tournament.
Marshall was also selected for another national coaching honor as Collegehoops.net has chosen him the 2007 Mid-Major Coach of the Year. Marshall completed his ninth year as the Winthrop helm and led the Eagles to their finest year with a third straight Big South Conference championship, a seventh NCAA appearance in the past nine seasons and the first win in the NCAA tournament.
Winthrop finished 29-5 and was the first team in Big South history to go undefeated during the season as the Eagles went 14-0 in regular season play and swept the tournament in three games. With the 29 victories, Marshall hit the all-time wins mark as a coach in Big South history surpassing former Radford head coach Ron Bradley who compiled 192 wins in 11 years. Marshall's record now stands at 193-83.
In addition to the two National Mid-Major awards, Marshall was also voted the 2007 Big South Conference Coach of the Year for the fourth time.
