Eagles take three-game series from Radford

Wilson, Franzblau, Settle net wins over Highlanders; Eagles improve to 22-15

The Winthrop baseball team completed a three-game sweep of the Radford Highlanders in their third conference series of the season April 6-7 to improve to 22-15 overall and 8-1 in the Big South.

In the first game of the double-header Friday afternoon, the Eagles rode the stellar pitching of sophomore Alex Wilson who carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning. Wilson gave up one run in seven innings of work to pick up his second win of the season.

The Eagles got on the board first in the top of the second inning when they got four runs on three hits. The inning was highlighted by freshman catcher John Murrian who stole home to score the fourth run. Murrian initially doubled down the right field line.

Winthrop added two more runs in the top of the fifth as senior infielder Chris Carrara led off the inning with a single and scored on a single by freshman infielder Kevin Nolan. The second run came when Nolan scored on a single by sophomore infielder Phil Carey.

Radford picked up one run in the bottom of the fifth and Winthrop added four more in the top of the sixth on two hits and two errors by the Highlanders.

The Eagles added one final run in the top of the eighth as the Highlanders committed yet another error which led to the run. Radford made a minor comeback in the bottom of the ninth as they scored two runs off senior Kellen Taylor, but the Eagles hung on for an 11-3 victory.

Pitching was again solid for the Eagles in game two as sophomore Jason Franzblau notched his sixth victory of the season. Franzblau gave up one run on six hits in 6.2 innings of work.

Winthrop struck first in the top of the first as they scored two runs on two hits and one Radford error. The Eagles scored two more runs in the top of the second. The first run in the second came off a bases-loaded walk to sophomore infielder Bryn Henderson. Carey notched the second run on a sacrifice fly.
