Winthrop 2, Liberty 7
In a battle between two of the top teams in the Big South Conference, Winthrop earned a double-header split against Liberty Friday afternoon at Terry Field.
The first game was a wild one that saw the Eagles come out on top 12-11 in nine innings. Liberty bounced back to take the nightcap 7-2 as Ashley Williams provided two home runs and six RBI.
Winthrop jumped ahead 8-0 in the first game as it took advantage of Liberty's miscues. In the third inning, the Lady Eagles scored five runs courtesy of three errors by Liberty second baseman Dawn Jeffs.
In the following inning, the Eagles added three more runs. Reid drove home the first run on a single to the shortstop, and Scrymgeour singled to the left side to make it 8-0.
Winthrop went ahead 9-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning as Reid homered to center field, her fourth of the season. Things looked to be in hand for the Eagles, but Liberty rallied for seven runs in the top of the seventh inning. The comeback was highlighted by a grand slam by Jessica Moore, which tied the game at 9-9.
Both teams scored in the eighth inning, and Liberty took an 11-10 run in the top of the ninth as Williams delivered a single to the shortstop. In the bottom of the ninth, Reid was placed on second and moved to third on a sacrifice by Scrymgeour.
Peacock delivered a single to right field to tie the game at 11-11. Three batters later Sarah Magee stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and a chance to win the game. Magee was hit in the foot and that allowed pinch-runner Pearl Coleshill to walk across home plate for the win.
Evans tossed nine innings allowing five earned runs on eight hits with two walks and eight strikeouts. Izzy Trottier, who relieved Evans in the seventh inning, didn't record an out and allowed four runs on two hits with one walk. Evans improved to 17-4 on the season.
