The freshman jitters for starting softball pitcher Megan Evans are over, but looking at last year's performance it seems as if they were never there.

Evans, now a sophomore, helped lead the Eagles to their first ever NCAA regional appearance during the 2007 season. She was also named the Big South freshman of the year in 2007.

Evans now comes back to Winthrop after a successful summer with the Canadian Junior National team. Evans, an Ontario native, threw 90 innings with 159 strikeouts during summer play. This led to 10 shutouts in just 14 games.

Over the summer, Evans also focused in on one area that she didn't get to use much during the season.

"I worked a lot on hitting and I did pretty well," Evans said.

Evans, with a batting average of .467 in Canada, showed that she is ready to step up to the plate.

She also showed that she was good enough to be named the Most Valuable Player of both provincial and national tournaments.

Evan's parents have always been her support, but neither expected this kind of success.

"They never expected me to play this high," Evans said. "They are the ones that are really dedicated."

Now as Evans looks forward to the season, she is beginning to feel the pressure again. Her focus is on another Big South championship and doing all she can to help the team.

"I want to produce like last year; I want to do better," Evans said.
