The Winthrop men's soccer team was definitely spooked on Halloween night in a Big South Conference game against UNC Asheville. UNC Asheville came into the game winless in conference play.
"They (UNC Asheville) aren't as poor as their records or statistics show and we couldn't get that into our heads," Coach Rich Posipanko said about the match-up.
This game featured plenty of tricks and treats for both teams. UNC Asheville got on the board early when Forward, Scott Szymanski's shot got past Winthrop goal keeper, Patrick Mitrovich to put UNC Asheville up 1-0 within the 20th minute of the first half.
As both teams went into halftime, UNC Asheville keeps Winthrop from scoring and keeps the halftime lead 1-0.
The Winthrop Eagles came out of halftime hoping the trick was not on them as UNC Asheville lead 1-0 going into the half. Winthrop desperately hustled to get a quick score and possibly swing the momentum into their favor. Within the 37 minute mark in the second half forward, Daniel Revivo, got a shot past UNC Asheville's goalie, Phillip Horner.
Revivo was assisted by Winthrop midfielder Stephen Nsereko to put the Eagles on the board and tied the game 1-1 with 36:57 left to play in the second half. The half was dominated by Winthrop, as the Eagles spent most of the second half in UNC Asheville's territory. The Eagles had plenty of scoring opportunities but were unable to capitalize on numerous opportunities. The second half ended in a 1-1 tie which led both teams into overtime.
The Eagles made quick work of UNC Asheville as forward Daniel Revivo scored the game winning goal with 2:50 on the clock in a 10 minute overtime. Revivo's shot was his second of the night winning the game 2-0.
"I just happened to be in the right place at the right time," Revivo said about the game winner.
UNC Asheville had its fair share of tricks but Winthrop ultimately earned the biggest treat of the night, a conference win.
