1/26 ASSAULT AND
BATTERY
The athletic director of Coastal Carolina University, Warren
Koegel, attacked a 23-year-old Winthrop student in the Coliseum parking lot after a men's basketball game. According to police reports, the victim and Koegel exchanged harsh words during the game. Officers told Koegel he could not touch a student even though they were arguing and then sent him on his way. No charges were filed.
1/31 POSSESSION OF
NARCOTICS
Winthrop officers discovered a 4-inch blade knife, pipes and marijuana residue as they searched a West Thomson Hall room. They also discovered prescription-only appetite suppressants, five unlawfully obtained methylphenidates, used for Attention-Deficit Hyperactive Disorder and prescription-only antibiotics. All drugs and paraphernalia were confiscated and the 19-year-old male was charged with possession of a Schedule IV Narcotic.
2/3 GRAND LARCENY
A white 1992 Pontiac Bonneville was stolen from the Courtyard parking lot. The victim, a 21-year-old student, told police the driver-side door was broken and impossible to lock. The car is valued at $2,000 and was entered into the National Crime Information Center.
2/5 BURGLARY
A short black male in all-dark clothing broke into a Lee Wicker room at 3 a.m. The 19-year-old student, who woke up from the light in the hall, made a movement and the intruder crouched down in the dark in a corner of the room. When the victim got up from bed and began moving toward the corner, the suspect ran out of the room, exiting the building and was last seen heading toward Cherry Road. No items were reported missing.
