Eagles come from behind; beat UNC Asheville on road

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Winthrop won 56-47 against Big-South foe UNC Asheville Saturday afternoon, rallying from a 15-point first-half deficit.
The Eagles were led by senior, forward Ashley Fann, who came off the bench to score 19 points and grab 17 rebounds.
Winthrop clamped down defensively on the Bulldogs and finally got some shots to fall in the second half.
With the win, the Lady Eagles improve to 8-11 overall and 3-4 in the Big South, while UNC Asheville falls to 7-14 overall and 4-4 in the conference.
Trailing 42-41, junior, gaurd Jessica Fansler hit two three-pointers on back-to-back possessions to put Winthrop ahead by five with 5:51 to go in the game.
After forcing a turnover on the Bulldogs, Winthrop came right back and forced the ball inside to senior, center Ashley Haugvtedt, who kissed the short shot off the glass for a seven-point advantage.
Neither team scored over the next three minutes and, with 1:33 remaining, Haugtvedt sealed the game up with a put-back for a nine point lead.
"You could see the tide changing in the final two minutes of the first half," head coach Bud Childers said. "We were dysfunctional in the first half; we couldn't do anything right. Once we got to the fourth media timeout we seemed to settle down."
The Lady Eagles opened the second half on a 14-2 run to take a 39-37 lead after a junior,guard Shelly Hankins three-pointer.
The Winthrop defense held UNC Asheville scoreless for a roughly eight-minute period in the second half.
UNC Asheville shot 50 percent from the field in the first half, despite going just 2-for-9 from behind the arc.
Meanwhile, Winthrop shot just 33 percent and missed 11 of its first 12 shots.
"We kept chipping away and finally got a few shots to fall," Childers said.
"The key to the game today was we hit some open shots," he said. "Fann played like Fann should play - maybe bringing her off the bench is the right medicine."
Fann came off the bench for the first time in 87 games and posted her sixth double-double of the season.
Fansler chipped in with 10 points and three assists, while senior, guard Yvonne van Daalen and Haugtvedt each had eight points.
The Winthrop bench outscored UNC Asheville 39-10 on the day.
