Nude photographs would be offensive to elderly audiences, spokesperson said

Associate professor of media law Justin Brown said because University Relations controls the Web site, they have the right to edit it as they like.
"It's not censorship per se, if it's their own Web site," he said. "They have the ability to act as editor of their site."
Hamilton said he understands the logic behind not printing the images but added it should not have to interfere with Winthrop's reputation.
"We're not an enterprise," he said. "We are an educational institution."
The art department at Winthrop has never had to censor the work of students or faculty members, Hamilton said.
"In the arts, one of the things I try to teach my students is to go out there and break the rules," Hamilton said. "That's what they're going to have to do in the world once they get out of here."
Hamilton also said he believes "pushing buttons" may bring some attention to Winthrop.
"You have to break with conventional norms," he said. "That's just the foundation of art…and creative thinking."
